Civil War :: essays research papers

Alpha - - - - - Alpha The main Greek letter set alpha represents the start of an occasion. Here, obviously, we are discussing the start of the Civil War. Ordinary history guarantees that the American Civil War began on April 12, 1861 at the besieging of Fort Sumter. Is it valid? We CW buffs most likely would not exactly fulfill with this answer, and we know there were furnished threatening occurrences happening well before Ft. Sumter, and we will look at them here. Carl Von Clausewitz, creator of "On War", said that war is the augmentation of politic. The South had long creation danger that they would withdraw if the nation chose the Lincoln as President. The North excused them. All things considered, the Southerners had been "talking" severance throughout the previous a long time since the 1820 Missouri Compromise. Too many cry wolves. In the mean time, the South idea that the North wouldn't battle. "I could wipe all the blood with my handkerchief" announced Leroy Walker, who later filled in as the main Confederate Secretary of War. "They are retailers and assembly line laborers. What do they think about soldiering?" The South accepted that one southerner could without much of a stretch beat 10 Yankees. So the two sides disparaged the other's assurance. The drumming of war cry were pounding gradually out of sight. In the long stretch of November 1860, occasions started to warm up. Lincoln got chose on the sixth. South Carolina required a Convention. New York financial exchange dropped its cost. Maj. Anderson was requested to Ft. Moultrie. Georgia casted a ballot a million dollars to arm the State. In December, South Carolina withdrew on twentieth. Anderson subtly moved the Federal army to Ft. Sumter around evening time on 26th. US Revenue Cutter William Aiken gave up to S. Carolina State power on request. It would be ideal if you notice that President Buchanan took the "do nothing" approach. Taking a boat is unmistakably a demonstration of war, as per the Northern perspective, yet a similar demonstration would turn into the protection of another Country from the Southern perspective. In any case, if the Federal decided not to retaliate, there would be no "conflict." So you could see that a progres sion of "incidents" occurred, however the Federal under Buchanan didn't react. The rhythm of war drum expanded in January 1861. South Carolina arranged for war/protection, sorting out soldiers and guarding the wharfs and dispatches, and held onto Ft. Johnson in Charleston Harbor. Government sorted out local army to protect the D.C. Capital.

Amazon Management Structure

Amazon Management Structure The board and Organization Behavior Presentation Though there are disparate perspectives regarding the matter of initiative and the executives, the consistent understanding among administration specialists like Myatt (2013) is that the association between supervisors/pioneers and their subjects can't exist in a vacuum. To fill this hole, a few administration ideas have been speculation throughout the years going from Contingency Theory and Systems Theory, to others, for example, Trait hypothesis just as Theory X and Theory Y. for instance, Theory X and Y manages how pioneers see their representatives inspiration to work, and how this discernment decides how such directors apply force and authority at the working environment. For example, chiefs who bolster hypothesis X accept that laborers are normally unmotivated and loathe their occupations. Hence, such directors incline toward a tyrant style of administration as they accept laborers must be pushed to perform.ã‚â As we will see later in the article, Amazons workers are check ed intently and carefully on the grounds that their pioneers accept they should be pushed to accomplish results. Then again, chiefs who bolster hypothesis Y accept that laborers are glad, self-roused and imaginative, and that such workers appreciate more prominent obligation. Such kinds of supervisors permit laborers to work openly without impedance. As indicated by Miles (2012), every one of these initiative ways of thinking are appropriate under one of a kind situation and can't in this manner be differentiated against each other. Rather, the emphasis ought to be on utilizing the important features of each to structure a superior by and large administration reasoning that is applicable in the exceptionally unique society we live in. One such endeavor at getting associations and how individuals inside them collaborate with one another was hypothesized by Morgan (1997), in his depiction of associations as political frameworks. In such manner, the Author sets that the levels and nature of political exercises in associations are dictated by the sort of political principle that exists in that (Evans, Hassard Hyde 2013). Utilizing Morgans model, this paper contends that Amazon is established upon the political typology of the board. Amazon.com, the biggest E-business organization is headquartered in the United States. Subsequently, the investigation depends on an article distributed in the New York Times that offers a knowledge of being a representative at Amazon. In light of the individual stories given by at various times laborers at the firm, the exposition will affirm the presence of all the six assortments of political guideline as talked about in the resulting sections. Dictatorship This alludes to a circumstance where an individual or a little gathering of individuals inside an association hold outright force (Gray 1999). This is made conceivable by the way that the individual or gathering controls all the basic assets, holds impressive proprietorship rights, or is supported by the associations customs. Morgans see on the dictatorial model is upheld by different creators like Vellnagel (2013 p.5) who contends that absolutist or tyrant pioneers are known to utilize the utilization of mystique just as other individual benefits. He includes that Autocratic pioneers see their situations as otherworldly and along these lines blameless. As can be noted from the article on Amazon, there are sure occurrences that point to a despotic authority model. For instance, the organization allegedly terminates laborers who neglect to adjust to the companys corporate way of thinking each year in what they term intentional Darwinism. These lay-offs are merciless as they target eve n the individuals who endure clinical ailment without giving them an opportunity to recoup (Kantor Steitfeld 2015). Correspondingly, absolutism shows itself in the way that the organizer, Jeff Bezos, still runs the organization and directs the administration theory in spite of the fact that being a gigantic traded on an open market organization worth $250 billion. In light of one record from a previous worker, Bezos upholds his Articles of Faith reasoning heartlessly as he thinks of them as an ethical benchmark against which everything is to be estimated. In addition, the companys initiative exercise tight control on the progression of data by approving just a couple of ranking directors to address the media importance there is no place for opportunity of articulation with individuals outside the organization. Maybe the best proof of dictatorship was seen from the episode where laborers pressing boxes were made to work in 100 degree heat without cooling and this proceeded even as some of them dropped. The circumstance possibly improved when the story got media inclusion. In the last passage of the article, it is clear that Amazon tells its applicants during prospective employee meet-ups that they either fit the profile or they dont (Kantor Steitfeld 2015). As it were, they need to grasp the Amazon way or leave, a pointer to the inside and out totalitarianism. Organization As confirmed by (Merz 2013 p.3) while talking about Max Webers hypothesis of administration, the bureaucratic association of exercises is the sign of innovation, a view repeat by Morgan when he consider that organizations depend on levelheaded standards. What's more, organization alludes to the authority practiced through dependent on a lot of composed words with no place for adaptability. Much the same as dictatorship, organization is showed in the administration of Amazon dependent on a portion of the current rules for workers. The principal sign of administration is found in the way that the progression of data is very controlled with just a bunch of senior administration staff approved to talk in the interest of the organization meaning one needs to follows a great deal of show to get any data about the organization. Besides, Amazons administration can be found in the initiative standards drafted by the author which directs how workers should act. While other innovation based org anizations permit some component of adaptability in their work environment, Amazon penetrates its guidelines to both existing and potential specialists significance there is no place for adaptability. Another zone where administration is obvious originates from the companys execution improvement plan-a program planned for notifying non-profitable specialists by managing close management to their day by day undertakings (Kantor Steitfeld 2015). While this is a significant device for observing or expanding efficiency, the model utilized at Amazon is somewhat unyielding as laborers are rebuffed aimlessly without setting aside effort to decide the reasons for decreased profitability. As can be noted from the records of different laborers who have succumbed to the program, inability to meet set targets is most brought about by unavoidable conditions, for example, sick wellbeing (Kantor Steitfeld 2015). Though the organization knows about this glitch in their program, it is obvious that senior administration has demonstrated little eagerness to alter their presentation the board approaches to think about these components. Technocracy In such manner, Morgan guaranteed that authority is practiced through use of information, intensity of specialists, just as the ability to create answers for regular difficulties. Different specialists like Olson (2015) agree with this view contending that administration under technocracy is named dependent on particular information or mastery. In light of the Amazon corporate way of thinking, this is maybe the most particular method of political guideline. For example, the companys organizer depends on information driven sort of the executives. In such manner, Jeff Bezos has extraordinary trust in the intensity of measurements, and this way of thinking was impacted by his previous duty at D. E. Shaw in the mid 90s whereby the utilization of calculations upset what was being utilized by Wall Street at that point. What's more, the use of technocracy to produce arrangements can be found in the companys strategy that requires all specialists to show possession by acing each part of thei r business. Amazons workers are to investigate issues profoundly and thought of inventive information based arrangements that will help take care of clients issues (Kantor Steitfeld 2015). One case of this can be viewed as the organization is separating its mechanical limit to think of new creative approaches to convey to their client for example bundle conveyance by ramble and computerized resupply of bathroom tissue. These thoughts are completely created by the companys workers as a feature of what is anticipated from them. In view of the record of different specialists, Amazon has been fairly quick in reacting to changes which every other person in the working environment is simply starting to understanding. As summed up by a previous faculty official at the organization, information permits the organization to consistently screen singular execution. In such manner, the vast majority of the over a significant time span representatives at Amazon reliably concur that the organization has the innovative edge and speaks to where others might want to be later on. Co-assurance This alludes to a kind of political standard that includes contradicting parties that meet up to as one to oversee ventures that are of shared interests (Gray 1999). In such manner, each gathering draws upon a predefined power base. Though the senior position or force at Amazon remains to a great extent concentrated, there are parts of the association, particularly at the lower levels, where the idea of co-assurance is obvious as can be seen from the records of the over a significant time span workers. For instance, the Anytime Feedback Tool is a device that exists in the organization index with the target of making it feasible for laborers to associate with the supervisory group about the advancement, or absence of their partners (Kantor Steitfeld 2015). While these devices can be utilized by an area of representatives to dole out close to home retributions with their associates, it is additionally a significant instrument as it makes two focuses of expert in the working environment . Basically, the workers from rival groups can choose to join to execute ventures of shared interests rather than having a go at each other. Direct vote based system

Transformational Leadership Guide Definition, Qualities, Pros Cons, Examples

Transformational Leadership Guide Definition, Qualities, Pros Cons, Examples “Transformational leaders don’t start by denying the world around them. Instead, they describe a future they’d like to create instead.” â€" Seth GodinTransformational leadership is among the more recent leadership theories. It focuses on a leader’s ability to inspire followers and it does so by focusing on a vision that can change the structures around the organization. Its objective is clear when you simply look at the word the theory is built around: transform. But how do you get people to follow a vision? Is transformational change always a good idea? © Shutterstock.com | alphaspiritIn this guide, we will hope to answer the above questions and delve deeper into the model of transformational leadership. We’ll start by examining the ideas behind the style, its core elements and the requirements of a transformational leader. We’ll also examine the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theory and present you with a few examples of true transformational leaders.UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT CONTEXTS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIPTo understand leadership theories, you often have to look at the history of how the model developed. Understanding the different ideas that contributed to the growth of the framework can make it easier to comprehend the modern context and use of the structure. In this section, we’ll examine the different historical texts, which influenced the birth of the transformational theory and the ideas these theories added to the framework. We’ll also explore the current theory introduced by Bernard Bass.T he historical contextAlthough James MacGregor Burns is considered as the father of the transformational leadership theory, James V. Downton first coined the term. In his 1973 book Rebel Leadership: Commitment and Charisma in a Revolutionary Process, he studied the concept of charisma and it’s influence in religious leadership. But Downton’s work remained rather unnoticed and the concept of transformational leadership didn’t take off until the publication of Burns’ Leadership. The book came out in 1978 and it examined different leadership models of the time in detail. According to Burns, most of these models focused on a transactional process, focusing on different exchanges between the leader and the subordinates. On the other hand, he thought transformational leadership is different, as it engages the leader to form a relationship with the subordinates and ensure it motivates them and improves their moral behavior. Transformational leadership was a process in which “leaders and followers help each other to advance to a higher level or morale and motivation.”The central focus for Burns was to identify this difference between the transactional and transformational leadership. For Burns, transactional leadership was based on the idea of give and take approach. An example would be a salary negotiation, where both sides want to find a balance between what they have to give in order to receive something. On the other hand, Burns believed transformational leadership to create a value shift between the leader and the subordinate. The leader would achieve change in the subordinate’s views through a subtle and positive manner. The differences of transactional and transformational leadership are explained well in the below image: Based on concept from James MacGregor BurnsBurns’ transformational leadership framework saw the leader’s behavior and traits as the transforming power in empowering the subordinates and in changing the organization. The leader would be able to instill change because they were exceptional role models. In this sense, Burns viewed transformational leadership framework as a force for good. He believed the model is linked with higher order values and strong morals; therefore, denying the style can be attributed to leaders who’ve done disastrous things in the past. In fact, Burns theory of leadership was among the first to introduce the ethical and moral dimension as a cornerstone of the theory.Burns’ theory was influenced by Abraham Maslow’s Theory of Human Needs, which is summarized in detail in the below YouTube clip. Essentially, Maslow recognized how human behavior is based on needs and finding the way to fulfill them. The higher range of needs is what Burns was interested in , as the transformational leader needs a good self-esteem and self-actualization to succeed. The modern contextThe modern framework of transformational leadership is based on the research and writings of Bernard M. Bass. Bass extended Burns’ ideas in 1985 in Leadership and Performance. His focus was on highlighting the psychological mechanisms influencing transformational leadership and to provide a test for measuring a leader’s transformational capability. The Multifactor Leadership Quiz (MLQ) will be explored in detail in the next section. In essence, Bass wanted to explore the ways a leader is able to influence subordinates. Bass expanded on Burns’ trait theory and emphasized the leaders characteristics in order to transform the subordinates’ view on things. While Bass believed transformational leadership to be about challenging the status quo and creating a shift in the way things are conducted, he also saw the framework could include transactional aspects. For Bass, the two leadership models were not mutually exclusive, but more of a continuum of models. The above image represents the continuum and shows that while the styles are different, they are not exclusive of each other. According to Bass, a leader can operate by using all of the three frameworks, rather than sticking to one.Nonetheless, a transformational leader would focus on changing the framework, even if he or she occasionally used a different approach. In another article titled From Transactional to Transformational Leadership, Bass criticized the transactional leadership style for implementing the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” approach.According to Bass, this type of approach won’t lead to business success, but it will guarantee stagnation and problems in the long-term. On the other hand, transformational leadership will “broaden and elevate the interests of their employees”, “generate awareness and acceptance of the purposes and mission of the group” and can ensure “employees look beyond their own self-interest for the good of the group”.In or der to do so, he or she would have to use influence and charisma and provide the subordinates with a clear idea of the vision or mission ahead. In Bass’ theory, there are three different ways to transform and influence subordinates:Enhancing the subordinates’ awareness of the importance and the value of the task.Instead of focusing on their personal interests, the subordinates should be directed to achieve the operational goals first.Activating the subordinates’ higher-order needs.Interestingly, Bass originally concluded transformational leadership as amoral theory. This meant the vision and charisma of the leader are not always a positive force, but could and have potentially been used harmfully. For example, leadership under Jim Jones could be characterized as transformational, even though it was horrific for the subordinates in the end. Nonetheless, Bass later changed his views on the matter, after dialogue with Burns, concluding that transformational leadership has a moral agent, which should always be used for good.THE CORE ELEMENTS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIPNow that we’ve explored the concepts and contexts around transformational leadership, we can turn our attention to the core elements of the model. The key elements include Bass’ four transformational components and the test he developed for analyzing a person’s leadership style.Bass’ four componentsThe core idea of Bass’ transformational theory focuses on the ways a leader can change the organizational structures around him or her and to ensure the subordinates follow him.In order for this to happen, Bass identified four components, which create the framework for transformational leadership: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration. These four became known as the ‘four Is’ of the leadership style.#1 Idealized influenceTransformational leadership rests on the idea of individual charisma. The key reason the leadership style works is due to the assumption that leaders can use their own example as a motivator for specific behavior. In essence, because the leader ‘practices what he preaches’, the subordinates will follow his or her example. The leader is able to show conviction regarding the vision he sets out; he or she remains loyal to the cause and is willing to put him or herself on the firing line. This kind of behavior resonates with the subordinates on an emotional level and they start viewing the leader as a role model.Through this concept of idealized influence, the transformational leader can start building relationships, which are based on trust and respect. By taking risks, following his or her core values and convictions, and showing strong moral ideals, the leader will begin to develop a sense of confidence from the subordinates that he or she is serious. This begins the process of internalizing the leader’s ideals and emulating the behavior.#2  Inspirational motivationThe above provides the leader with the ability to spark confidence, motivation and a clear sense of purpose, which provides the framework of inspirational motivation. The framework for transformational leadership would not work appropriately, if there weren’t a constant promotion of a consistent vision and well-defined values to guide the team.A clear vision provides the leadership the tools to outline with clarity what actions are necessary and why they can help the team reach the desired goal. Due to the lucidity in the purpose, the subordinates are constantly aware of what is required of them and what their personal purpose within the bigger picture is. This provides the subordinates with a sense of meaning, while also setting them challenges to achieve the objectives.Transformational leadership’s motivation is based on tangible objectives and optimism about achieving them. The idea is that by creating a sense of purpose, the subordinates are more willing to work, especially when they understand what the goal is.Furthermore, this component requires the leader to show confidence towards subordinates and support to help them achieve the goals through focus on self-development. #3  Intellectual stimulationTransformational leadership aims to enhance creativity and it actively seeks to promote autonomy and shared responsibility. Although it doesn’t necessarily set out a clear decision-making framework, it does tend to fall towards a more democratic model. Intellectual stimulation, which includes shared decision-making and innovation at its core, is a key component in the leadership framework.Instead of making decisions for the subordinates and telling them what to do, the transformational leader calls for innovative thinking and ‘get it done’ mentality. Subordinates are encouraged to be in charge of their own decisions.A big part of intellectual stimulation relies on the approach the leader takes towards problems and ideas. Subordinates are free and encouraged t o solicit ideas without the fear of critique under this system. Instead of stating that a certain approach is wrong, the leader aims to change the way subordinates think about a problem and to see the different ways they could overcome the issues facing them.Overall, transformational leadership framework is not set. If the processes are found ineffective and unhelpful in the quest to achieve a certain vision, then a transformational leader is willing to change the system.#4  Individualized considerationFinally, the last component of the theory is individualized consideration. Transformational leadership framework celebrates team effort, but it also understands the contributions of individuals. Furthermore, the leader should acknowledge the subordinates’ personal needs and desires, both professionally and in private life. The theory borrows from participative leadership theory in the sense that it realizes people are motivated by different things. One approach doesn’t fit all and if the leader wants to get the most out of his or her subordinates, then there must be consideration for these specific needs. Therefore, one-on-one coaching and mentorship are crucial for the leadership to work. The personalized training should be aimed at finding ways to reach these individual needs and to align them with the larger operational goals. The focus is not only on education and training, but also in the fulfillment of the individual need for self-actualization, similar to Maslow’s ideas.Under the framework, individuals and their achievements are celebrated equally to what the team is able to achieve. This provides further motivation for each individual to continue focusing on self-development and to work on the personal and operational goals to the best of their ability.Test for transformational leadershipOnce Bass had established the framework for transformational leadership, he also went on to find a way to measure how deeply leaders and their subordinates at any si tuation showcase these characteristics. His assessment became to be known as the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ).The questionnaire measures the components of leadership, with the initial questionnaire focused on Bass’ analysis of transformational leadership in his 1985 article. But the test has since been updated, although the basis is still rooted in the earlier factor analysis. The current version MLQ 5X focuses on around 26 items, which are divided into 9 scales. The nice scales include:Inspirational motivation. Tests the articulation and representation of vision by the leader.Idealized influence (attributed). Examines how much charisma is attributed to the leader.Idealized influence (behavior). Looks at how the leader acts upon the values of the collective sense of purpose.Intellectual stimulation. Tests how followers’ beliefs are challenged and helped to analyze their problem solving.Individualized consideration. Examines how the individual needs are taken into co nsideration.Contingent reward. Studies the leaders ability to provide rewards for followers when tasks are accomplished.Active management-by-exception. The scale measures how actively the leader looks for deviations from the rules and the set processes and corrects issues before mistakes.Management-by-exception. This scale is only evident if the leader intervenes after mistakes have been made.Laissez-faire. The scale focuses on measuring whether there is an absence of leadership. The MLQ test provides three outcome criteria. These include the followers’ Extra Effort (EEF), the Effectiveness of Leader’s Behavior (EFF), and the followers’ Satisfaction (SAT).The earlier versions of the test received criticism due to the limited research on the impact and framework of transformation leadership. An article on the Langston University website points out, for example, that the MLQ test was criticised for the wording it used. “Most items in the scale of charismatic leadership describe d the result of leadership, instead of specific actions of the leader that can be observed and that, in turn, lead to the results,” the article states.Since then, Bass together with Avolio has clarified and modified the test. In 2003, John Antonakis studied the viability of the test and found strong evidence to suggest the MLQ5X can be a reliable way to measure transformational leadership. The official MLQ test can be ordered from the Mind Garden website. It can be used for both research purposes, as well as for assessment and development.THE QUALITIES AND COMPETENCIES OF A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERAs transformational leadership relies heavily on the leader’s ability to influence the subordinates and communicate his or her vision to them, it’s imperative to study the traits the leader must have. In this section, we’ll examine not only the traits the leader must show, but also the key competencies required to be a transformational leader.Five major traitsTransformational leaders are often measured based on how much they showcase certain characteristics, referred to as the ‘Big Five’. Big Five refers to the Five Factor Model Of Personality, which examines a set of stable characteristics and measures how these influence a leader’s cognition and behavior. The Big Five includes the following dimensions: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion/introversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism/emotional stability. Joyce Bono and Timothy Judge’s meta analysis, published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, showed how transformational leaders relate to each of these five personality dimension.According to the findings, there is a strong correlation between the openness to experience and transformational leadership. This is not surprising, as transformational leaders are actively looking to challenge the status quo and therefore, they are constantly seeking to find new experiences.Furthermore, the ability to be open to experience was shown to imp rove the leaders ability to be creative. Once more, the leader’s ability to get subordinates on board with his or her vision is necessary and requires plenty of creativity. In regards to conscientiousness, the trait is associated with desire for achievement and the willingness to make changes in order to reach the goals. This type of behavior could be seen as essential for a transformational leader, although Judge and Bono didn’t find a strong correlation in their studies to support this idea. Indeed, the dimension was found to be more closely linked with transactional leaders and individuals who are detail-oriented. A transformational leader is often much more focused on the bigger vision rather than smaller details. On the other hand, agreeableness links more closely with transformational leader, since it alludes to the supportive nature of these leaders. Judge and Bono found it linked with transformational leaders strongly and associated with further traits of consideration and empathy. One of the reasons the trait might have such strong relation to transformational leadership might be its connection with charisma. Agreeableness is tied with individuals who display generosity, co-operation and affection.Extraversion was the most strongly linked personality dimension of transformational leaders. The dimension is essential for the mutual engagement of leaders with subordinates, which is why it’s a necessary part of the style. Extraverts are also charismatic and they tend to display strong communication skill, with the ability to persuade people of their vision. Finally, the dimension of neuroticism is often linked with a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Neurotic behaviors tend to cause anxiety, especially in a group setting and therefore, the dimension was the least linked trait with transformational leader. Transformational leaders are looking to lead a group and not shy away from it.You can view the results of the study from the below diagram: © Wikimedia Commons | Akaychestnut Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0Four key competenciesPerhaps more important than specific traits is the leader’s ability to show certain competencies. Transformational leadership relies heavily on the leader’s ability to ignite the subordinates and this requires a bit of skill.Murray Johannsen, founder of Legacee and Profession in Leadership Entrepreneurship, has identified four key competencies for transformational leaders. The skill of building a skill. The transformational mind-set.The use of social influence. The strive towards self-mastery.The first step is to learn how to empower other people, which refers to the idea of having the skill to help others build a skill. As a leader, you shouldn’t just focus on leading by example, but you also must support and show how you perform. The key to empowering others is following these steps:Start sharing information with employees to build trust and to share knowledge across the organization.Develop your vis ion until it is clear enough for everyone to understand. Ask advice and tweak your theories and ideas.Ensure employees aren’t afraid of mistakes. Don’t criticize or punish your subordinates for trying.Celebrate the successes and the failures. Teach employees that both success and failure are opportunities for growth and learning.Allow teams to form their own hierarchies and let employees take accountability for their actions.Your next competency development should focus on the transformational mind-set, i.e. thirst for change. Again, the key is to create a strong vision and idea of what you want your leadership to look like. Examine things such as what success and failure mean to you and how you want to lead. Transformational mind-set also requires you to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. If you aren’t aware of your own characteristics and qualities, it will be hard to change other things around â€" transformational leader is always able to see beyond smokes and mirro rs.As a charismatic leader, you need to enhance your ability to influence people. A great place to start improving this competency is by reading the 1959 book The Bases for Social Power by French and Raven. The classic article identifies five forms of power, showcased in the below picture: Based on The Bases for Social Power by French and RavenUnder the model, each system of power will influence your leadership. For a transformational leader the understanding of each power model is important because you might need to implement all of them at one point or another. The ability to use each power model will need different tactics. For expert power, you’ll need to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the structures around you. On the other hand, coercive power requires the development of authority and the ability to punish people in a fair but concise manner. Finally, you’ll need to develop the competency of striving towards self-mastery, the continuous development of the self. The competence relates directly to transformational leadership’s key building blog: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Once you have your basic needs fulfilled, you need to start working towards the final stage: self-actualization.How can you continue working towards these goals while jugglin g with work and personal life? Learning skills and improving your understanding of the self is not easy, but it also isn’t hard. Free tools online can provide you the option to focus on self-actualization even during stressful times. The key to self-development is to understand it is a journey. A journey you can take together with your colleagues and friends.ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIPAs transformational leadership is about inspiring subordinates to follow the vision of the leader, the framework can be highly fruitful. In this section, we’ll examine the benefits of the leadership in detail. Nonetheless, while the leadership theory brings plenty of positives to an organization, the framework is not always force for good. Therefore, we will also outline the downside to transformational leadership.Advantages of transformational leadershipLet’s start by peering at the positives. The first clear advantage of transformation leadership is engraved in t he name itself: transformation. The framework is aimed at creating change, and in business, the need for change is inevitable. As we mentioned earlier in the guide, a stagnant approach to running a business can lead to problems. Examples of this kind of behavior are plentiful. For example, consider the phone giant Nokia. For a long time it ruled mobile sales, but it didn’t continue to innovate quickly enough and once the iPhone entered the market, the company was too slow to follow. Transformational leadership can remove this behavior from a company, as it puts change and innovation to the core of what the organization does. The reason transformational leadership is effective in implementing change is due to its focus on a clear vision. A transformational leader is supposed to create a clear vision of the change the organization needs, which will make it easier for the subordinates to follow it. The framework helps an organization define its objectives clearly and create structures that support the vision.Learn how to draft a clear company vision by watching this video. Furthermore, the leadership theory tends to strike a balance between short- and long-term objectives. Since the framework focuses on meaningful and achievable objectives, it starts the long-term process by establishing short-term objectives to keep things going. Transformational leadership adds focus to an organization by understanding the key actions that need to be taken, without forgetting about the future goals the organization wants to achieve. In addition, the style is effective because it doesn’t just set out the objectives it wants to achieve, but the leader has an important role in supporting the subordinates in achieving this goal. The leader’s example provides motivation and inspiration for the subordinates, with a focus on pushing employees to higher standards. As mentioned above, transformational leadership provides the subordinates with opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally.Transformational leaders need to have integrity and high emotional intelligence. The empathy towards other people can help create meaningful relationships with others and ensure the leader-subordinate relationship is built on mutual respect and trust. These two qualities are crucial for creating a collaborative environment, which is passionate about achieving tasks.Ronald E. Riggio, psychologist and leadership expert, pointed out in an article published on the Psychology Today website, how studies have shown groups with a transformational leader exhibit “higher levels of performance and motivation” compared to other types of groups. Subordinates under the leadership style have more support and options for personal development. While they might not be as involved in decision-making as in certain other types, there is still the notion of being part of something. The sense of community is often a powerful motivator for people. In essence, the increased motivatio n can boost a company’s profitability. In terms of operational efficiency, another big benefit to the style comes from how it creates other leaders with transformational qualities. Since individuals are using self-motivation and self-actualization as part of their work, they can use these talents to become transformational leaders themselves. In the event of the current leader leaving, the organization might have a line of potential leaders ready to take on the role.Furthermore, the leadership framework emphasizes collaboration instead of personal gains. Psychological studies, such as the Game Theory test, have repeatedly shown that co-operation is more effective in achieving goals compared to a more competitive approach. Transformational leadership’s focus on creating a common vision to work towards can result in faster results and more deep-rooted change within the organization.Since the leadership style is focused on change, it naturally suits organizations that are in need of transformation. Failing businesses, start-ups and companies lacking a vision can benefit immensely from the above advantages.Disadvantages of transformational leadershipThere are certain problems and disadvantages to the theory as well. Perhaps the main issue deals with the idea that transformational theory would always act as a force for good. In fact, sometimes the transformational leader can make things worse and cause huge suffering within the structure they are hoping to change. An example of this could be Mao Tse Dung. If you look at his leadership, then it has most of the hallmarks of transformation leadership, yet the changes led to human suffering. This essentially boils down to the problem of defining transformation. What constitutes as transformation? Even the official MLQ test has trouble clarifying this and the test could potentially suffer from the so-called test effect. The person being tested could see what factors the test is analyzing and looking for, answering wit h this knowledge in mind.Furthermore, the leader’s focus on change and the vision can cause ‘reality blindness’. The enthusiastic and passionate approach can be a force for positive change, but it could also diminish the leader’s willingness to investigate things further and face up to inconvenient facts. Being driven by one’s own ideals and vision might not lead to the right results. An element of becoming blind can also take place with the subordinates’ relationship with the leader. Since the leader creates a positive and supportive relationship with the subordinates, the subordinates’ ability to critique the leader or indeed the project might become compromised. The leadership’s enthusiastic approach can lead to overdependence, in which the team ends up chasing goals that aren’t realistic or obtainable. The leader’s enthusiasm and his or her call for unity can also lead to conformity rather than collaboration. Subordinates might find it easier to just ‘go alon g’ with the leader, instead of truly buying the vision or feeling confident about the plan. If you don’t have people believing in the mission, the effectiveness of change can drastically reduce.Similar to charismatic leadership, the transformational leader needs to use impression management as a basis for motivating his or her subordinates. But the focus on ‘leading through example’ has the downside of slipping into the territory of self-promotion. There can be a danger to become more concerned about the protection of self-image and self-promotion that the support and empowerment of subordinates fades into the background. This video with Brian Tracy shows you how to become a transformational leader. Transformational leadership is not an easy leadership style to implement or master. It can take plenty of experience to become truly good at creating meaningful change and therefore, teaching and learning this style can be difficult. The person needs to spend enough time understan ding the concepts, gaining enough knowledge on leadership and different industries, and developing emotional intelligence. The process can therefore seem overwhelming and people might find it more comfortable to result to other types of leadership models.Overall, for the leadership style to work and provide the above advantages, the leader must have the right characteristics detailed in the previous section. Thus, the pressure on the leader to achieve and to be able to motivate all of his or her subordinates is rather high. If the leader is unable to convince the subordinates about his or her vision, then the framework won’t work at all.EXAMPLES OF FAMOUS TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSSince transformational leadership is such a powerful force for change, history has seen its fair share of transformational leaders. Leaders in sports, politics, religion and business have used the transformational style to implement their visions and change the structures around them. Examining these leade rs can help understand the frameworks and characteristics of this leadership style in detail.William Edwards DemingWilliam Edwards Deming is not your ordinary politician or a business guru. Yet, he showed tremendous leadership qualities during his time at the US Department of the Army after the war.In 1928, Deming received a doctorate in mathematics and physics from Yale. He became known for his work with the US government and as the father of statistical quality control. When World War II was ravaging the globe, Deming helped teach statistical process control techniques to military production employees in order to improve the production and help the war effort. He was determined to change the inefficient structures and make sure everything was done to enhance the support of the troops.Once the war ended, the US government sent him to solve problems relating to agricultural production in Japan. Deming managed to convince the Japanese officials that the industrial uses of statistical methods can help improve production and boost to country’s economy. The job wasn’t easy, but Deming used his expertise and passion to get the officials on his side. As you might know, within a short while Japan became the leading industrial powerhouse in the world, much of it thanks to Deming’s methods.Few of the most telling quotes by Deming include the following:“We are here to make another world”“A bad system will beat a good person every time.”“Innovation comes from the producers â€" not from the customer.”The quotes perfectly capture ideas of the transformational leadership. The framework is about creating a vision and the world has to constantly be willing to change in order to become better.Nelson MandelaAnother obvious example of a transformational leader is the great Nelson Mandela. Mandela transformed a whole society and he did it with forgiveness and love. He showed the characteristics of a leader that everyone wanted to aspire to.Peter Northouse wrote i n his 2013 book Leadership: Theory and Practice, that a transformational leader is someone who is able to “engage with followers and create a connection that raises the level of motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower”. Mandela exemplified this by forgiving the people that imprisoned him and kept him away from his family for years. He showed people that empathy and love will conquer over fear and resentment â€" only by rising together can society achieve its goals.Mandela was able to articulate his vision of whites and blacks living together equally in South Africa. In 1942, he led a peaceful revolution against the government, trying to overturn the unequal land distribution in the country. Mandela knew that the revolt, although aiming to be non-violent, would lead to his own prosecution. Yet, he led through self-sacrifice. His followers continued to be inspired during and after his time in prison. They understood that through their self-actualization that th e need to be free is strong and that is would only come about through democracy. One of the best examples of his transformational leadership skills was his ability to use the 1995 Rugby World Cup as a reconciliatory power to bring the nation together. It instilled a sense of national pride to the nation â€" no matter what the color of your skin was; you were still a South African.Mandela was a charismatic man and he had the ability to inspire people who never had a chance to meet him. You can find some inspiration from the below talk by Mandela: John D. Rockefeller / Standard OilThe world of business has also seen its fair share of transformational leaders. Among the businesspersons that shaped the world or their industry, the American business mogul John D. Rockefeller must be close to the top. Rockefeller founded Standard oil in1870 as a humble, small oil refinery. Quickly, the company grew into a global oil giant, as it increased its size through acquisitions and Rockefeller’s v ision. The success came through Rockefeller’s focus on quality products and his staunch organization strategy. He was disciplined and he wanted these values to be highlighted in his company as well. The reason Standard Oil managed to grow so rapidly was down to the vision of Rockefeller. He wanted each operation in the organization to work towards the single objective and everyone, including himself, was accountable for ensuring the objective is achieved.Rockefeller’s vision was clear in both his business and personal life. When he received his first paycheck at the age of sixteen, he promised to give one tenth of his money to charity once he retired. Due to his business successes, he ended up giving around $550 million.“Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people,” Rockefeller once said, highlighting the importance of inspiring and empowering people to the next level. One of the issues that ended hindering Rockefeller’s leadershi p was his dedication. He was so committed to transforming the industry and working towards his vision that he never had a proper break. He suffered an emotional breakdown due to overworking, reminding leaders everywhere that sometimes it’s essential to just have a break.Ross Perot / Electric Data SystemsAnother example from the business world comes in the form of Ross Perot. He started out as a salesman for IBM, before launching his own company in the 1960s. Electric Data Systems (EDS) serviced computer systems for companies and organizations and it was one of the first business ventures he undertook.Perot’s vision was based around action. He was closely involved in training his employees and helping them to understand that whatever the customer asks, their duty is to help. There were no approvals and questionnaires to be filled â€" if you know how to fix it, you simply do so.At one point, the company’s motto was “We bring order to chaos”. No one was considered above one a nother. It was all about transformation and action.Bass wrote in 1990 that Perot’s transformational leadership was very self-effacing. Perot himself once said, “To a lot of guys I don’t look like I could afford a car.” Yet, EDS ended up being a $2.5 billion organization, which used quasi-military management to finish the job efficiently.Like Rockefeller, Perot’s leadership also included a strong personal element in everything he did. In 1979, he helped in the efforts to rescue hostages in Iran; two of who were his employees. He never forgot about the importance of other people and he cared about the wellbeing of his subordinates. They were as big part of his vision as he was.His ideas and vision are clear in his statement that,“Punishing honest mistakes stifles creativity. I want people moving and shaking the earth and they’re going to make mistakes.”FINAL THOUGHTSTransformational leadership is built around the idea of leading by example. It is about empowering peopl e to achieve their full potential and work towards the concept of self-actualization. From Burns to Bass, the theory has been built around the idea of challenging and changing the status quo and thriving towards greatness. The model emphasizes the importance of the leader, who must be able to create a clear vision of change and explain this vision in a manner that inspires followers the join in on the fight. The transformational leader must use his or her charisma, persuasion and empathy in order to create a structure that enthuses the followers. While transformational leadership can be highly effective in situations of problems and lead to empowering people, it has its share of downfalls as well. Although Burns and Bass both believed transformational leadership requires a moral component, history has shown that not all change is good, even if the intentions are there. Like charismatic leadership, transformational leadership can slip into a personality cult, where reality blurs into t he background as the organization only focuses on the given vision ahead of them.Yet, the measurability of transformational leadership with MLQ and the examples from the corporate and political world show that a strong vision can help take organizations to the next level. Since the world is not stagnant, leadership should also consider maintaining its continuous flow towards change.

Analysis of John Clares I Am - 973 Words

Kaitlin Kelleher March 11th, 2013 ENG 252 Darrohn Analysis of John Clare s â€Å"I Am† Through the use of punctuation (or lack thereof), repetition, and rhyme scheme, John Clare s first stanza of â€Å"I Am† expresses the speaker s distorted sense of self and vast understanding of his morose existence. The following stanza has been chosen as the analysis point for this paper: I am-- yet what I am, none cares or knows; My friends forsake me like a memory lost:--I am the self-consumer of my woes;--They rise and vanish in oblivion s host,Like shadows in love s frenzied stifled throes;--And yet I am, and live-- with vapours toss t (Lines 1-6) This poem is believed to be a direct reflection of Clare s unfortunate time spent in an†¦show more content†¦This may seem like an inconsequential difference, but it is obvious that Clare was very precise in choosing rhyme scheme just as he was with his punctuation and repetition. It can be said that Clare chose this particular style to set the first stanza apart from the rest. While the second and third stanza are more out of the way, as in, looking towards the future and what he wishes would be, the first stanza is all about his self assessment and coming to terms with what he is, has, and does. The rhyme scheme also draws particular attention to each ending word. The negative connotation in the context in not lost thanks to the simplistic rhyme style. Some of the words found in the first stanza are lost, toss t, woes, throes, etc. These words are connected closely with the relative pessimistic meaning behind them. The rhyme scheme is another addition to Clare s overall mo rose feel of the first stanza. Clare does a fair job in capturing how it is to be a lonely, melancholic soul, grieving the loss of friendship in love, all while making it clear that the speaker has a vast knowledge of self awareness. The simplistic seeming set up of the stanzas lends to a much deeper understanding of the human condition. â€Å"I Am† is written with precise punctuation, purposeful repetition, as well as a distinct rhyme scheme which helps to create the morose but understanding atmosphere that exists in the speaker s head. These dimensions are called the Big Five. The Big Five consists of Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Instability, and Openness. We will write a custom essay sample on personality traits or any similar topic only for you Order Now A combination of questions and answers provides information that determines which characteristics are associated with each other. If teams were handpicked with specific goals in mind, these characteristics could determine whether the team succeeds or not. For xample, a team made up of aggressive, deceptive, passive and destructive personalities would probably not agree on anything. The Big Five have been gathered through the result of decades’ worth of psychological research into personality. While they don’t capture the idiosyncrasies of everyone’s personality, it is a theoretical framework in which to understand general components of our personality that seem to be the most important in our social and interpersonal interactions with others (psychcentral. com/blog/archives/2009). Everyone took the same test and the results came out very different from each ther results. Johanna is a very well organized and can be relied upon, extremely outgoing, social and energetic. Agreeableness, finds it easy to express irritation with others. But also is generally relaxed most of the time. Gracie is reclusive, quite, unassertive, and private; overly organized, neat, structured, and retrained at the expense too often of flexibility, variety, spontaneity and fun. Gracie is relaxed, calm, secure, and optimistic in life. Moderately kind natured, trusting and helpful while still maintaining own interests. At times can be suggested overly small minded, raditional, and conventional at the expense of intellectual curiosity, possibility, and progress. Megan does not typically seek out new experiences, very well organized and can be relied upon. Extremely outgoing, socially, and energetic, good natured, courteous, and supportive. Generally relaxed at the most times in life and in most situations. Dawn is at times overall talkative, outgoing, sociable, and interacting at the expense of developing own individual interests and internally based identity. Overly organized, neat, structured and restrained at the expense too often of flexibility, ife at most times. Is overly kind natured, trusting, and helpful at the expense too often of your own individual development. Is intellectual, curious, imaginative, but possibly not very practical in life. Working together is a great asset once we learn how to utilize everyone’s skills. Being on a team allows for much more perspective rather than Just our own. Looking at the Big Five Assessment results we can determine who is the most organized and works best under pressure. We can also tell who has a creative personality and is open to trying new things. These are all excellent traits to ave for a team completing an assignment. When breaking down the team assignments it would be in our best interest to choose someone who pays close attention to detail, is organized, as well as dependable to be our leader. If we chose a procrastinator and someone who is easily anxious we may wind up with a late or unprepared assignment which would cost us points. Knowing what everyone’s strengths and weaknesses are allows us to really know who we are working with and how to handle our assignments. Looking at the Big Five assessment we can easily determine who has which traits. According to the results we all got, the Big 5 Personality Test is not the most reliable test to describe an individual’s personality. There are various factors that define someone’s personality, but if an answer is need instantly then the test is big help. For example for a Job interview, the Big 5 Personality Test is an extremely good way to somewhat let the employer know if that person is a good candidate for that certain position. According to each other’s result we did not exactly came to an agreement for the accuracy of this test. In my opinion it was accurate, for myself. But I would not use the test to define who I am. Dawn’s results were indeed not accurate one- hundred percent. Due to the fact that it said he was more of an extrovert than an introvert, when in fact he is the opposite. The Big Five test is perfect for online schools because it lets everyone know which person works well under pressure, who procrastinates, and who is an over achiever, and more. With this, each team can be prepared for what it is in stores within their team. The Big Five is a valid test for certain things, but it indeed does not define who an individual is. It is a very good elp, to begin working with others but we each will get to know each other as we all work together. â€Å"The weakness of the Big Five Theory is that there is some debate among researchers as to what makes up the core of each element† ( Booker, Kitchen, Rebman. 2007). It is clear that we all have different opinions of what makes up each of the components that the test is divided into, but we all have some similarities therefore the test is not that much inaccurate. Different definitions but same key points, which makes the Big Five Test a good method for online school and other hings such as Job interviews. The various personality tests can give a synopsis of a person’s likely hood of working well within a group setting. It cannot however take into consideration all the various situations that may take place during this period. A person can start out with the best of intentions and fail. There may be a lack of communication among the group, prior personal commitments, technical issues, or just not understanding the assignment. You have people that adjust to any situation want to work by themselves because they do not trust others to do their share. The Big Five can be a useful way of helping an individual to understand themselves and others. You normally don’t get to see the results of your teammate or coworker, so you are both working in the dark. Seeing the results can also lead to mistaken profiling. In most team assignments, you really don’t get to know the people that you are assigned to work with due to time limitations. Walter Lippmann, an influential American writer, Journalist and political commentator, once said â€Å"For the most part we do not first see, and then define; we define first, and then we see. Pride and Prejudice Summary

'Pride and Prejudice' Summary Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice follows Elizabeth Bennet, a spirited and clever young woman, as she and her sisters navigate romantic and social entanglements within 19th-century Englands country gentry. Chapters 1-12 The novel opens with Mrs. Bennet informing her husband that the nearby great house, Netherfield Park, has a new tenant: Mr. Bingley, a wealthy and unmarried young man. Mrs. Bennet is convinced that Mr. Bingley will fall in love with one of her daughters- preferably Jane, the eldest and by all accounts the kindest and most beautiful. Mr. Bennet reveals that he has already paid his respects to Mr. Bingley and that they all shall meet soon. At a neighborhood ball, Mr. Bingley makes his first appearance, along with his two sisters- the married Mrs. Hurst and the unmarried Caroline- and his best friend, Mr. Darcy. While Darcy’s wealth makes him the subject of much gossip at the gathering, his brusque, arrogant manner quickly sours the whole company on him. Mr. Bingley shares a mutual and immediate attraction with Jane. Mr. Darcy, on the other hand, is not so impressed. He dismisses Janes younger sister Elizabeth as not pretty enough for him, which Elizabeth overhears. Although she laughs about it with her friend Charlotte Lucas, Elizabeth is wounded by the comment. Mr. Bingleys sisters invite Jane to visit them at Netherfield. Thanks to the machinations of Mrs. Bennet, Jane gets stuck there after journeying through a rainstorm and becomes ill. The Bingleys insist upon her staying until she is well, so Elizabeth goes to Netherfield to tend to Jane. During their stay, Mr. Darcy begins to develop a romantic interest in Elizabeth (much to his own annoyance), but Caroline Bingley is interested in Darcy for herself. Caroline is particularly irritated that the object of Darcys interest is Elizabeth, who doesn’t have equal wealth or social status. Caroline endeavors to eliminate Darcys interest in Elizabeth by speaking negatively about her. By the time the girls return home, Elizabeth’s dislike for both Caroline and Darcy has only grown. Chapters 13-36 Mr. Collins, an obsequious pastor and distant relative, comes to visit the Bennets. Despite not being a close relation, Mr. Collins is the designated heir of the Bennets estate, as the Bennets have no sons. Mr. Collins informs the Bennets that he hopes to â€Å"make amends† by marrying one of the daughters. Nudged by Mrs. Bennet, who is certain that Jane will soon be engaged, he sets his sights on Elizabeth. Elizabeth, however, has other ideas: namely George Wickham, a dashing militiaman who claims that Mr. Darcy cheated him out of a parsonage he had been promised by Darcy’s father. Although Elizabeth dances with Darcy at the Netherfield ball, her loathing is unchanged. Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy and Caroline Bingley convince Mr. Bingley that Jane does not return his affections and encourage him to leave for London. Mr. Collins proposes to a horrified Elizabeth, who rejects him. On the rebound, Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeths friend Charlotte. Charlotte, who is worried about getting older and becoming a burden on her parents, accepts the proposal. The following spring, Elizabeth goes to visit the Collinses at Charlotte’s request. Mr. Collins brags about the patronage of the nearby great lady, Lady Catherine de Bourgh- who also happens to be Mr. Darcy’s aunt. Lady Catherine invites their group to her estate, Rosings, for dinner, where Elizabeth is shocked to find Mr. Darcy and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. Elizabeth’s unwillingness to answer Lady Catherine’s prying questions does not make a good impression, but Elizabeth learns two important pieces of imformation: Lady Catherine intends to make a match between her sickly daughter Anne and her nephew Darcy, and Darcy has mentioned saving a friend from an ill-advised match- that is, Bingley and Jane. Much to Elizabeths shock and fury, Darcy proposes to her. During the proposal, he cites all the obstacles- namely, Elizabeths inferior status and family- that his love has overcome. Elizabeth refuses him and accuses him of ruining both Jane’s happiness and Wickham’s livelihood. The following day, Darcy gives Elizabeth a letter containing his side of the story. The letter explains that he genuinely believed Jane to be less in love with Bingley than he was with her (though her family and status did play a role, he admits apologetically). More importantly, Darcy reveals the truth of his family’s history with Wickham. Wickham was a favorite of Darcy’s father, who left him a â€Å"living† (a church posting on an estate) in his will. Instead of accepting the inheritance, Wickham insisted that Darcy pay him the value in money, spent it all, came back for more, and, when Darcy refused, tried to seduce Georgiana, Darcy’s teenage sister. These discoveries shake Elizabeth, and she realizes that her prized powers of observation and judgment did not prove correct. Chapters 37-61 Months later, Elizabeth’s aunt and uncle, the Gardiners, offer to bring her along on a trip. They end up touring Pemberley, Mr. Darcys home, but are assured that he is away from home by the housekeeper, who has nothing but praise for him. Darcy makes an appearance, and despite the awkwardness of the encounter, he is kind to Elizabeth and the Gardiners. He invites Elizabeth to meet his sister, who is excited to meet her. Their pleasant encounters are short-lived, as Elizabeth receives news that her sister Lydia has eloped with Mr. Wickham. She hurries home, and Mr. Gardiner tries to assist Mr. Bennet in tracking the couple down. News soon arrives that they have been found and are to be married. Everyone assumes that Mr. Gardiner paid Wickham off to marry Lydia instead of abandoning her. When Lydia returns home, however, she lets slip that Mr. Darcy was at the wedding. Mrs. Gardiner later writes to Elizabeth and reveals that it was Mr. Darcy who paid off Wickham and made the match. Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy return to Netherfield and pay a call on the Bennets. At first, they are awkward and leave quickly, but then return almost immediately, and Bingley proposes to Jane. The Bennets receive another unexpected visitor in the middle of the night: Lady Catherine, who has heard a rumor that Elizabeth is engaged to Darcy and demands to hear that it is not true and never will be true. Insulted, Elizabeth refuses to acquiesce, and Lady Catherine leaves in a huff. Rather than stopping the match, Lady Catherine’s escapade has the opposite effect. Darcy takes Elizabeths refusal to acquiesce as a sign that she might have changed her mind about his proposal. He proposes again, and this time Elizabeth accepts as they discuss the mistakes that finally got them to this point. Mr. Darcy asks Mr. Bennet’s permission for the marriage, and Mr. Bennet gives it willingly once Elizabeth reveals to him the truth of Darcy’s involvement with Lydia’s marriage and of her own changed feelings for him.

Growth Mindset Professor Ramos Blog

Growth Mindset Introduction Have you ever met someone who said something like, Im simply bad at math? Did you know that this is a preconceived limitation that is simply not true? Its called a fixed mindset. While its common for people to get discouraged when they fail at something too often human beings are quick to wage war on themselves. Someone who would say theyre bad at something is actually just bad at having this thing called a growth mindset. Often individuals accept these preconceived limitations, but the reality is human beings are really just terrible at estimating their abilities. Its true that every individual has their initial talents, aptitudes, interests, and temperaments, (24) but these natural inherent qualities are not fixed and subject to change. We like to put ourselves and others into boxes saying things like, smart or dumb, hes good at this but not at that. Theyre good or bad. Degenerate or prodigy. Labels are important and necessary but they should not be used to define an individual. We humans are not one-dimensional. Judgments are inevitable but they prevent us from learning and ultimately from growing. To summarize psychologist Carol Dweck, author of the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success and creator of this concept, when our minds are fixed we spend our time documenting our intelligence or talent instead of developing them (42). In my report I will first Define what a growth mindset is and who came up with it, explain the difference between a fixed and growth mindset, simplify how to obtain it, show its effectiveness through a personal story and explain why its important. What is a Growth Mindset? Simply put a growth mindset is the belief that abilities can be developed. Its a belief that construes intelligence as malleable and improvable (Ng). Its opposite counterpart, a fixed mindset, is the belief that abilities are fixed. Whether we are aware or not we all have beliefs, or non-beliefs, that strongly affect what we want and whether we succeed in getting it. Carol Dweck focuses on beliefs you have about yourself and how it has profound effects. She says these beliefs guide a large part of your life. In fact, it permeates every part (Dweck). The Difference Between a Fixed and Growth Mindset A fixed mindset is the belief that your qualities are carved in stone. Dweck says this creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. If you have only a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality, and a certain moral character, well then youd better prove that you have a healthy dose of them. It simply wouldnt do to look or feel deficient in these most basic characteristics (11). Its a defense mechanism against feeling inadequate. Dweck says shes seen so many people with this one consuming goal of proving themselves in a learning setting, their careers, and in their relationships. Every situation calls for a confirmation of their intelligence, personality, or character. Every situation is elevated: will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or dumb? Will I be accepted or rejected? Will I feel like a winner or a loser (16)? On the other hand is the growth mindset, based on the belief that your basic qualities are thing s you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies and help from others. Although people may differ in every which way with their initial talents, aptitudes, interests, or temperaments, everyone can change and grow through application and experience (7). The difference between the two is in the following expressions. Someone with a growth mindset might say nothing ventured, nothing gained and if at first you dont succeed, try, try again or Rome wasnt built in a day. To summarize Dweck she says, what is truly amazing is that people with a fixed mindset would not agree. For them, its nothing ventured, nothing lost. if at first you dont succeed, you probably dont have the ability. If Rome wasnt built in a day, maybe it wasnt meant to be. In other words, risk and effort are two things that might Reveal your inadequacies and show that you are not up to the task. Those with a fixed mindset do not believe in putting in effort or getting help. They can do it on their own. Humans are the only species that believe they can do everything on their own. Every other species socializes and depends upon each other but human beings are self-made individuals that can and have relied solely on them self. It sounds nice, independent and confident but this way of thinking can actually be insecure and limiting. How to Obtain a Growth Mindset We need each other to learn and to grow. This is one thing the growth mindset teaches. Dont be afraid to raise your hand and ask someone if dont know something. That fear makes you a nonlearner. Not knowing something makes you human. Dweck quotes Benjamin Barber, an eminent political theorists saying I dont divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures I divide the world into the Learners and nonlearners. If youd like to cultivate a growth mindset and be a learner you can. Saga Briggs breaks down 25 ways to develop a growth mindset, Ill list the ones that resonate with me: Use the word yet. Whenever you see a student struggling with a task, just tell them they havent mastered it yet. Not yet. Acknowledge and embrace imperfections. Hiding from your weaknesses means youll never overcome them. Follow the research on brain plasticity. The brain isnt fixed; the Mind shouldnt be either. Replace the word failing with the word learning. When you make a mistake or fall short of a goal, you havent failed; youve learned. Now what did you learn? Cultivate a sense of purpose. Dwecks research also showed that students with a growth mindset had a greater sense of purpose. Keep the big picture in mind. Value the process over the end result. Intelligent people enjoy the learning process, and dont mind when it continues beyond an expected time frame. Personal Story: Mengyuan Wu Mengyuan Wu came from a traditional Chinese culture where she was taught some people are naturally talented and that this was the only way she could be truly good at something. When she was young her mother strived to discover her talents and so she was sent to a variety of classes. None of the classes pique her interest and so she was labeled as being without flexibility, artistic sense or any talent. With the belief that the goal of Education was to achieve excellent academic performance Mengyuan consequently felt a lot of pressure. Later she was introduced to the growth mindset concept and remembered a quote that goes like this: What matters is what you learn and get out of it, not how high your score is. With this in mind pressure slid off her shoulders and she started learning for the sake of learning instead of validation. She felt less stressed and thus could perform better. She applied the growth mindset beyond academics and took up a passion in fencing. Her parents never let her fence when she was younger because they didnt think she had the talent. As an adult her parents still had their doubts about their daughters passion but the growth mindset gave her a renewed confidence. She pushed her physical limits and persevered winning a bronze medal. When deciding on a college and whether to take up fencing the growth mindset altered her perspective on the fear of not being good enough and being rejected. She remembered what mattered; what you learn and get out of it and not how high your score is. Mengyuan’s choice in college didnt come from a place of proving herself. She came to understand that the best university for her was not the university on the top of the list but rather one that best matched her. She enrolled herself in a school and a sport that she enjoyed and when she failed she persevered and learned from it because it was what she wanted to do. Why is a Growth Mindset Important? This mindset is important because its natural consequence is success. Empirical Studies have revealed that growth mindset has positive effects on student motivation and academic performance of all ages (Ng). According to Dweck, teaching growth mindset to Junior High School students resulted in increased motivation and better academic achievement, especially in particular subjects such as science and mathematics. Furthermore mindsets play a significant role in student success. The development of growth mindsets allows children to exercise autonomy over their learning thus producing higher success (Boylan et al). In order to understand why this mindset is important you need to know that this mindset feeds intrinsic motivation. When people experience an inherent satisfaction of an activity itself they are intrinsically motivated. If a person is doing the activity in order to attain some reward, such as a grade or social recognition they are extrinsically motivated. Intrinsic motivation is much more powerful. When you have a growth mindset you are acting out of intrinsic motivation and when your actions are motivated by your individual interests and choices you foster a sense of purpose and meaning. In other words youre not just doing or learning something because you have to but because you want to.So if you have no purpose in life but you cultivate a growth mindset and act out of autonomy you will feed intrinsic motivation and therefore foster a sense of purpose. A growth mindset is important because it could potentially be the cure for depression and because of the positive impact it has on students. Theres a reason teachers dont call you stupid when you ask a stupid question because theyve cultivated this mindset. This concept is in our school systems because its more than important, its effective. Conclusion To summarize Carol Dweck, the passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when its not going well, is the Hallmark of the growth mindset. This is a mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives. By this concept nobody and nothing can hold us back. No matter who you are, where you come from or what youve been through your capabilities are limitless with infinite possibilities to choose from. In other words, no matter what life throws at us we can do anything we set our minds to, man.

Greek Goddess Athena, Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom

Greek Goddess Athena, Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom She sums up many of the Greeks gifts to Western culture, from philosophy to olive oil to the Parthenon. Athena, daughter of Zeus, joined the Olympians in a dramatic way and figured in many founding myths, including taking an active part in the Trojan War. She was the patron of the city of Athens; its iconic Parthenon was her shrine. And as the goddess of wisdom, the strategy of war, and the arts and crafts (agriculture, navigation, spinning, weaving, and needlework), she was one of the most important gods to the ancient Greeks. The Birth of Athena Athena is said to have emerged fully formed from the head of Zeus, but there is a backstory. One of Zeus many loves was an Oceanid named Metis. When she became pregnant, the King of Gods remembered the danger he posed to his own father, Cronos, and in turn, how Cronos dealt with his father Ouranos. Wary of continuing the cycle of patricide, Zeus swallowed his lover. But Metis, in the darkness of Zeus interior, continued to carry her child. After some time, the King of Gods came down with a royal headache. Calling upon the blacksmith god Hephaestus (some myths  say it was Prometheus), Zeus asked that his head be split open, whereupon sprang gray-eyed Athena in her glory. Myths About Athena Befitting the patron of one of Hellas greatest city-states, Greek goddess Athena appears in many classic myths. Some of the most famous ones include: Athena and Arachne: Here, the Goddess of the Loom takes a skilled but boastful human down a peg, and by transforming Arachne into tiny, eight-legged weaver, invents the spider. The Gorgon Medusa: Another tale of Athenas vengeful side, the fate of Medusa was sealed when this beautiful priestess of Athena was wooed by Poseidon in the goddess own shrine. Snakes for hair and a petrifying gaze ensued. The Contest for Athens: Once again pitting the grey-eyed goddess against her uncle Poseidon, the contest for the patronage of Athens was decided for the god who bestowed the best gift to the city. Poseidon brought forth a magnificent (salt water) spring, but wise Athena gifted an olive tree- a source of fruit, oil, and wood. She won. The Judgement of Paris: In the unenviable position of judging a beauty contest between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, the Trojan Paris put his money on the one Romans would call Venus. His prize: Helen of Troy, nà ©e Helen of Sparta, and the enmity of Athena, who would tirelessly back the Greeks in the Trojan War. Athena Fact File Occupation: Goddess of Wisdom, Warcraft, Weaving, and Crafts Other Names: Pallas Athena, Athena Parthenos, and the Romans called her Minerva Attributes: Aegis- a cloak with the head of Medusa upon it, spear, pomegranate, owl, helmet. Athena is described as gray-eyed (glaukos). Powers of Athena: Athena is the goddess of wisdom and crafts. She is the patron of Athens. Sources: Ancient sources for Athena include: Aeschylus, Apollodorus, Callimachus, Diodorus Siculus, Euripides, Hesiod, Homer, Nonnius, Pausanias, Sophocles and Strabo. A Son for a Virgin Goddess: Athena is a virgin goddess, but she has a son. Athena is credited with being part-mother of Erichthonius, a half-snake half-man creature, through an attempted rape by Hephaestus, whose seed spilled on her leg. When Athena wiped it off, it fell to earth (Gaia) who became the other part-mother. The Parthenon: The people of Athens built a great temple for Athena on the acropolis, or high point, of the city. The temple is known as the Parthenon. In it was a colossal gold and ivory statue of the goddess. During the annual Panathenaia festival, a procession was made to the statue and she was clothed in a new outfit. More: Since Athena was born without a mother sprung from her fathers head in an important murder trial, she decided that the role of the mother was less essential in creation than the role of the father. Specifically, she sided with the matricide Orestes, who had killed his mother Clytemnestra after she had killed her husband and his father Agamemnon.

Industry Paper-Exploring organaizational development and strategies Essay

Industry Paper-Exploring organaizational development and strategies - Essay Example With the advent of time, the vacuum cleaner industry has undergone drastic changes. The globalization of the markets, rapid developments in the technologies, easy access to cost-effective manufacturing destinations and growing concern for eco-friendly products and services have stressed the need of modifying the organizational structures and strategies (European Commission, 2009). The vacuum cleaners are supplied in accordance to the demands of the customers, government, society and environment so that every stakeholder can get benefitted. All the key players of the vacuum cleaner industry such as Dyson, Dirt Devil, Electrolux, Kirby, Hoover, Vax, Black & Decker, Miele, Oreck and many more have same organizational structures and strategies. However, they differ in terms of their competency level and product differentiation strategy. The early form of vacuum cleaners was the self-contained ones which were the foremost and sole suction machines. These first machines were introduced and invented in Europe by Hubert Booth in early period of 1900s and his company’s name was Goblin. Next, the upright vacuum cleaners were created which had a revolving brush for loosening the debris. These appliances were conceived by James Murray Spangler and a few years later were introduced in US by Hoover. The early entrants of the vacuum cleaner market in UK were Electrolux in 1908, followed by Vorwerk in 1929 and Miele in 1931 (European Commission, 2009). During the period of 1960s, the concept of professional carpet cleaning was inaugurated. This latest trend was refined by Alan Brazier under the brand Van in 1980s. This was the turning point in the European vacuum cleaner industry as Vax Ltd. took over more than half of the UK market by the end of 1980s. Hoover and Bissell launched the extractors or upright carpet washers in Europe and US in the early years of twenty-first century. In 1911,

Bessie Smith Essay -- Biography Biographies

Bessie Smith Known as the â€Å"Empress Of Blues†, Bessie Smith was said to have revolutionized the vocal end of Blues Music. She showed a lot of pride as an independent African-American woman. Her style in performance and lyrics often reflected her lifestyle. Bessie Smith was one of the first female jazz artists, and she paved the way for many musicians who followed. Bessie was born April 15, 1894 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to a part time Baptist preacher, William Smith, and his wife Laura. The family was large and poor. Soon after she was born her father died. Laura lived until Bessie was only nine years old. The remaining children had to learn to take care of themselves. Her sister Viola then raised her. But it was her oldest brother, Clarence, who had the most impact on her. Clarence always encouraged Bessie to learn to sing and dance. After Clarence had joined the Moses Stokes Minstrel Show, Bessie got auditions. Bessie's career began when she was 'discovered' by none other than Ma Rainey when Ma's revue, the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, was passing through Chattanooga around 1912 and she had the occasion to hear young Bessie sing. Ma took Bessie on the road with the show and communicated, consciously or not, the subtleties and intricacies of an ancient and still emerging art form. (Snow). Bessie started by working small-time traveling tent shows. With the help of Clarence she began her professional career in 1912, and soon became a featured singer. Smith was an established star with the black audiences throughout the south by the time she moved to Philadelphia in 1921. However, two more years would pass before she would begin her recording career. Soon after moving to Philadelphia, Smith supposedly auditioned for Okeh and other... ... Pennsylvania. For many African-Americans, Smith was more than just a blues singer, thanks to an aggressive personality and often-excessive lifestyle. It seemed as if she was describing black culture in the 1920s through her songs. Smith recorded at least 160 songs for Columbia Records from 1923 to 1933. Many of these songs are blues classics. Bessie Smith was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Bessie Smith had a huge voice capable of strength and softness, which she left behind on all her recordings. Bibliography: Davis, Angela Y. Blues Legacies and Black Feminism.
